HCM City makes plans to preserve Cho Lon

Authorities in HCM City are considering a project to preserve Cho Lon, known as China town, in order to build it up as a tourist attraction. Ong and Ba pagodas among rare remains of old Cho Lon The municipal Department of Planning and Architecture made a report on the project to the municipal government on June 4. Cho Lon covers an area of 68 hectares, including several wards in Districts 5 and 6. The area boasts various cultural sites such as temples, Chinese pagodas, Binh Tay Market and churches, in addition to folk and traditional festivals such as the Mid-autumn and Tet holidays. The plan would begin with preservation pilot projects in three areas that occupy a total of around 14 hectares. These areas are home to the majority of cultural sites. The first area includes Thap Muoi, Le Tan Ke, Bai Say, and Tran Binh streets, along with Hang Bang canal. The second area includes Phu Dong Thien Vuong, Nguyen Trai, Luong Nhu Hoc, and Tran Hung Dao streets. The third area comprises Hai Thuong Lan Ong, and Van Kiep streets as well as Vo Van Kiet Revenue. Experts who took part in the project's study said that, if approved, the project would not only help preserve the cultural heritage and identity of the area but also foster tourism development and increase incomes in and around the areas. They added that preservation is of great importance, as development in the area has been gradually infringing on Cho Lon. In addition to preserving existing infrastructure and limiting the height of new buildings in protected areas, the plan also calls for the upgrading of the square in front of Binh Tay Market, pedestrianising roads and cracking down on illegal parking. The plan also recommends upgrading Hang Bang Canal. Currently, authorities in District 6 have made plans to relocate and compensate 940 households living along the Hang Bang Canal, along with the owners of 58 stores to the south of Binh Tay Market. The project's consultant proposed that the Binh Tay Market also be upgraded to create a large public space that would be greenery, water transport and restaurant and shopping areas. Lang Co Beach

With its gradually slopping, white sand beach, the average depth of less than 1m and the average temperature in the bathing season of 25?C, Lang Co is an ideal beach for tourists. Lang Co Beach lies on the most beautiful curve of the "S", where you can be the first to see the sun rise in Vietnam. Lang Co attracts visitors for its wild beauty with mountains, forests and sea. Located on the northern part of Hai Van Pass on National Highway No.1A, about 80km south of the imperial city of Hue, Lang Co Peninsula looks even more mythical and beautiful amid the blue sea and white sand. Visitors can see many local wonders and landscapes such as Chan May, Mo and Hoi Cam streams. Tourists can enjoy sea diving, mountain climbing, and fishing with local fishermen. Hoang Tien Dzung, chairman of the Management Board of Ha Long Construction Company, which is developing a tourist resort in Ngoc Island, said that the island will become a national conservation centre for its richness in biodiversity, especially its coral and bird life. "Formerly, the French admired Lang Co as a lost paradise, which has inspired many poets and writers," Mr Dzung said. "The People's Committee of Thua Thien-Hue province is planning to further exploit Lang Co's potential to boost eco-tourism." The province launched a big festival called "Lang Co - the myth of the sea" on August 20. So far, it has attracted more than 10,000 visitors with diverse cultural and aquatic activities. Local authorities have also organised a seminar to introduce Lang Co's potential to investors. Nguyen Duy Giam, director of Thua Thien-Hue's Tourism Promotion Centre, said that Lang Co lies within the Chan May-Lang Co site, which is part of the major economic project embracing Canh Duong, Lang Co, Hai Van and Non Nuoc areas. "An international resort centre with 12 functional sections will be built in this area," Mr Giam revealed. "It will include a golf course, villas and coastal resorts, hotels, restaurants and trading areas, and a cultural and artistic centre." By now, 20 projects have committed to investing in the Chan May-Lang Co tourist site. Each project will cost between US$3-5 million and cover hundreds of hectares. During the past five years, these projects have helped upgrade infrastructure in the Canh Duong-Lang Co area, making it more attractive and accessible to visitors. Noteworthy is that the number of tourists to the fairyland of Lang Co has increased remarkably since the opening of Hai Van Tunnel. Great efforts are being made to awake the once-forgotten paradise and bring its potential into full play to serve the people. Ha Long puts spotlight on ethnic cultures

The rich culture of ethnic communities in northern coastal Quang Ninh Province and northeastern regions was highlighted at the spectacular Carnival Ha Long 2012 held last night. Photo by Dantri/Dtinews An event to mark the province's Ha Long Bay being listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, the carnival was the biggest ever since first held five years ago. Thousands of people, including many foreign tourists, enjoyed special performances featuring the hospitality and beauty of Quang Ninh's people and land. Several famous artists, including the People's Artist Quang Tho as well as songstresses Ho Quynh Huong and Ngoc Anh, took part the event. In addition, performances by art troupes from South Korea, China, Laos and the Philippines created extra cultural diversity at the event. A vivid parade gathering thousands of ethnic people living in the province took place on the city's main street alongside the beach. Unlike other previous carnivals, where most of the performers were professional artists, this year's event gathered more than 3,000 ethnic performers drawn from the San Chay, San Diu, Tay and Dao. "Only the ordinary people are able to expose their culture truly and vividly," said the carnival's general director, People's Artist Le Tien Tho. The tourists also had a chance to learn about the unique cultural of different ethnic groups when several traditional festivals and customs were presented. They wallowed in the festive atmosphere of a traditional wrestling competition of Quang Yen District, or a rice-planting kick off ritual from women of the Ha Nam Island in Yen Hung District. While the San Diu group living in Van Don replicated a traditional wedding, the Dao, Hoang Bo and San Chay groups presented folk dances. The carnival became more beautiful with a spectacular fireworks performance presented by French artists. The parade was also joined by a group of 300 local Buddhists, aiming to promote the spiritual culture of the province, considered as a cradle of Vietnamese Buddhism. The 1,068m above sea level Yen Tu Mountain in the province is the place where King Tran Nhan Tong in the 13th century founded the Truc Lam Zen School. The site attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, contributing significantly to the province's socio-economic development. Vietnamese environmental record holders announced

On the occasion of World Environment Day, June 5, The Vietnam Record Book Organisation, Vietking, in conjunction with the environmental website www.tinmoitruong.vn announced their selection of the seven greatest contributors to improved environmental awareness and activity. 1. Biggest Endangered Primate Rescue Centre The Endangered Primate Rescue Centre based at Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province, is the first of its kind in Indochina. It is also home to the highest numbers of primates in South East Asia. The Centre currently houses about 150 primates from 15 species. Most of them are listed in the Vietnam and World Red Book of Endangered Species and seven are considered are endangered or critically at risk of extinction. 2. Biggest natural lake on limestone mountain Ba Be Lake in Bac Kan Province which was formed 200 million years ago was honoured. The biggest natural lake in Vietnam appeared at the end of Cambri era when the earth's crust shifted. The area consists of approximately 500 million cubic metres, with the deepest part of the lake dropping to 35 metres depth. The water in Ba Be Lake is filled by water from the Pe Lam, Pe Lu and Pe Leng rivers. In 2011, UNESCO recognised Ba Be Lake as Vietnam's third Ramsar site. 3. Biggest marine samples collection The Institute of Oceanography or the Oceanographic Museum in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province currently possesses one of the world's largest collection of marine samples. 20,000 samples featuring 5,000 species are on display at the museum. The 5,000 square metre Museum includes the sample storage area that takes over 1,000 square metres, with 2,000 square metres devoted to raising marine species. 4. First factory recycle nylon to oil industry in Vietnam The factory was built at Khanh Son dumping ground in Danang by the Vietnam Environment JSC. The factory also recycles waste that is difficult to decompose such as rubber into industrial fuel. 5. Biggest solar power system in Vietnam Vietnam Intel Products in HCMC put into operation the biggest solar power system in Vietnam on April 23, 2012. The plant can provide 321,000 KwH and reduce 221,300 kg in carbon emissions annually. 6. Biggest artificial lake That is the Thac Ba Lake in Yen Bai Province. The 240 kilometres wide lake is a reservoir of Thac Ba Hydro Power Plant. It has about 2.9 billion cubic metres and 1,300 islets. In 1996, Thac Ba Lake was recognised as a national heritage site. 7. Biggest wind power plant Built in 2008 and completed in 2011 by Vietnam Renewable Energy JSC, the wind power plant in Binh Thuan Province is the biggest wind power plant in South East Asia. The VND 2 trillion (USD96 million) plant can provide 90 million KwH and reduce carbon emissions by 50,000 tonnes per year. AMD cancels monthly Catalyst driver releases

AMD has decided to discontinue the monthly graphics driver updates that have been with us for years. Instead the tech giant will now focus on releases that will see light of day "when it makes sense". "With the release of the Catalyst 12.6 Beta driver, AMD would also like to announce that we are moving away from our monthly Catalyst release plan. Our goal is to ensure that every Catalyst release delivers a substantial benefit to our end users; as we have today with the release of the Catalyst 12.6a Beta. We will still continue with the Catalyst naming convention; Catalyst: Year.Month., You just won't see a new driver every single month. We are confident that this will only benefit the end user; you'll only need to upgrade to a new Catalyst driver, when it makes sense," said Andrew Dodd, a spokesman for Catalyst development team at AMD. ATI Catalyst Logo The tradition of releasing new graphics drivers every month dates started with ATI Technologies well before the company was acquired by AMD in 2006. The first Catalyst driver was released in June 2002 just months before the very successful ATI R300 graphics chip was launched. AMD now says that the cancellation of the monthly releases will allow the company to focus on creating the best drivers possible instead of releasing drivers just to meet the monthly schedule. Interest rates may continue to fall

Bank interest rates may continue to decrease this year, said Nguyen Duc Kien, Vice Chairman of NA's Economic Committee. Though an economist of World Bank said Vietnam cut interest rate too quickly and that will badly affect the economy, Kien thinks bank interest rate can still be lowered in the current situation. Would lowering interest rates at this time is appropriate? Economic indicators show that it is an appropriate time. If we don't lower the interest rates, enterprises will run into even more difficulties. At the end of April this year, although a large number Vietnamese enterprises had announced bankruptcy, the number of newly-established enterprises were still 10,000 higher. This shows that our economy is gradually becoming stable. We have to create favourable conditions for those businesses that survived and convince investors that this is the right time and place to invest. In theory, lowering deposit interest rate to 11% should have brought the lending interest rate for preferential enterprises to 14%. However many of these businesses claim they could not access credit at this lowered rate. Is the decision to lower interest rates feasible? So if we keep the expectation in 2012 at 7-8% and deposit interest rate at 9-10% then the interest is still positive and attractive for people. Do you think government can continue to lower interest rate? The index of industrial development has increased again, and hopefully it will change from negative to positive in June. The economy is recovering, but it would be unrealistic to expect to see immediate and dramatic effects. If the EU can make a real recovery this will automatically provide a boost to Vietnam, as it is one of this country's largest export markets. I think the CPI this year will be around 7-8% and our economic growth will be around 5.5%. If this is the case, the interest rates could continue to lowered in accordance with the State Bank of Vietnam's plan. More importantly, it will encourage enterprises to borrow, invest and create new jobs. In addition, as growth in commercial services and manufacturing is between 14% and 16% per year, interest rates of 10% and 12% will encourage more investment. Go into the wild at Hon Thi Island

About three kilometers from the land, Hon Thi is located in Ninh Ich Commune, Ninh Hoa District, Khanh Hoa Province. So to get to the island, you can take a boat from Da Chong Beach or from Ninh Ich Commune. When you arrive there are flocks of deer and ostrich which you can feed, play with and watch them run around the area. Along the island are also many stunning beaches with many rock beaches. Along the beach are many sea vegetables, wild flowers and many trees you've probably never seen before. Inside the island, tourists will see a number of orchards with many kinds of fruit trees such as guava, orange, dragon fruit, sugar apple and coconut. The island is also home to fishing boats and many vestiges as it used to be a temporary home for people when storms come. There is a small temple which was built in 1998 and is dedicated to worship the sea god. It is littered with rock gardens, piling up into caves so tourists can go on an adventure with a flash light. However, the journey is not for the faint-hearted just the brave and the bold. As the island is still primitive, you have to bring your own food and drink.
